Description

The reader sees the perils and joys of Ancient Rome through the eyes of a modern child – including going to an ancient Roman school, meeting the emperor and tasting delicacies of the day (including honey-dipped dormice! Maximus the general who become a slave, the slave who became a gladiator, the gladiator who insulted the emperor "commadous",it's agood story, now people wants to how the story ends ! I was a master of make-believe by age ten, and when the time was right, both passions fused into my debut novel, also set in Ancient Rome. The patient, slow pacing of the film seems to take a sudden halt here, and then fast-forward in an amazingly rapid-fire pace with quick shots, swinging swords, vivid skies and a great score by Hans Zimmer to further emphasize the dramatic mood.

The one power stronger than that of the emperor is the will of the people, and Maximus knows he can attain his revenge only by becoming the greatest hero in all the Empire. Despite the fact that his little sister drives him mad, life in the present day with his family is infinitely preferable. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!

I must admit I read this when I was in a very fragile state of mind having just suffered a terrible tragedy of my own, so it’s possible that affected my reading of A Day of Fire and how I responded to it, but I know it was extremely well written and I was so glad to have read it.

Along the way, author de Morais sneaks in a slew of fascinating facts about life during the Roman Empire. It will compare the battle and fight scenes in the film with reality from contemporary sources and modern tests and reenactments. What was it like to live in one of the ancient world's most powerful and bustling cities - one that was eight times more densely populated than modern day New York?
