I remembered simpler days when Tyler and I were so broke that we lived off of frozen edamame and ice cream. Her family life was messed up and that is totally not out of the norm, but she had to do something to make a mark on this world. Also, I didn't care for her gratuitous nod to conventional middle-class American morality near the end: “That was my fucked up life and I guess it has some entertainment value. In other chapters, she goes into brutally honest detail about the state of STD's and cleanliness in the porn industry, as well as how close she was to being a victim of the AIDS breakout in 2004. Porn is chock-full of sexism, racism, and classism that the audience of primarily men are getting off on.

Pale pink wraps featuring art by the author, black ink lettering, glossy photo section bound in; handmade Japanese paper DJ; lucite slipcase. I think if it were to be made into a TV series or streaming series or a movie, it would be well recieved. And as with the most honest soldier’s memoir, you look forward to finishing it even as you can’t put it down—you hit the halfway point of this 310-page book, and you’ve already read chapters entitled “Double Anal,” “Pissmop,” “Gonorrhea,” “Choked Out,” “Anal Fisting,” “Ass Herpes,” and you think, There’s more? While reading this book I was asking myself the question whether or not I was being guided by an unreliable narrator. She portrays porn as an industry full of abusive sleazeballs and druggie degenerates, but she's also quick to point out when someone she met while working went out of their way to treat her kindly or respectfully. Of course she had relationships with at least one absolute sicko and the people on some of these sets were terrible.

It's shocking, it's crude, it's disgusting, and you start to wonder how anyone could demean themselves in such ways. This quote from her and the word happiness from her book disturbs me- 'I have always had a high thresh for the gross, the vulgar, the sickening. She works hard to put her porn experiences in an appropriate emotional context, describing why she felt that some of what she did was more liberating than degrading. The first couple of shooting scenes described were already so disgusting that I was reading with a grimace on my face. This makes the parts of "Girlvert" where Oriana finally learns to assert herself even more inspiring. She has a problem with honest, but no problem with her boyfriend dipping stamps in Drano and selling them to 7th graders. Sure, the war years instilled a sense of noble sacrifice in the 'Greatest Generation,' but DPs are free. Then finally, after 6 years in the business, she finds someone who seems to actually care for her and fills her with confidence rather than a mixed bag of bodily fluids. If you are looking for a prism that disturbs the fabric shrouding the behind the scenes dealings of the pornographic industry, then this book does a great job. I loathe the attitudes about women and their sexuality that I believe Small's specific genre of pornography perpetuates, but I do respect her willingness to expose herself by writing a memoir. I loved it—it was exhilarating, I could feel a rush in my entire body, a rush of fluids out of the stomach, mouth, eyes, and nose all at once. They provide expert and detailed descriptions, disclose all significant defects and/or restorations, provide clear and accurate pricing, and operate with fairness and honesty during the purchase experience. Oriana Small has pushed herself to the outermost extremes of what the body and mind are capable of—all before turning thirty years old—and now she's made it an authentic read for the rest of us to marvel at, elevating the depravity and denial inherent in the pornographic arts to a singular literary experience.
