Lovett’s First Impressions: A Novel is an absolute delight, mired in mystery and romance and taking place in both present day England and Regency England. Accepting the challenge of playing opposite him, Eddi soon realizes that he is difficult to work with on and off the set. She crossed her legs and gazed past the honeysuckle-laden trellis to a woodpecker that was determined to pound his beak into the oak at the porch’s corner. Her draft manuscripts do not survive, so we do not know exactly what changes she made, but if the first draft was written in letters, substantial changes were made to create the novel we know and love today.

In 2003 the BBC conducted a poll for the " UK's Best-Loved Book" in which Pride and Prejudice came second, behind The Lord of the Rings. Sophie is a devoted Janeite, freshly graduated from Oxford and unsure of which path to take to kickstart her adult life. The irony of the opening line is that generally within this society it would be a woman who would be looking for a wealthy husband to have a prosperous life. Please note that for each novel in the series, she says her characters are “based on” Austen’s, which means that an Austen lover will see the similarities, but Smith has not insisted that the characters “do everything” as the Austen originals.Darcy is a famously wealthy landowner; Tom had to work – he came from a large Irish family who depended upon him to make his fortune. Pride and Prejudice and Poison, Four Months to Wed, Forced to Marry and The Rescue of Elizabeth Bennet. Lovett decided with this tale to devote each alternating chapter, never breaking that sequence, to first Jane Austen and then his modern-day Janeite heroine, Sophie Collingwood.

For the upper-middle and aristocratic classes, marriage to a man with a reliable income was almost the only route to security for the woman and the children she was to have. Earlier this year I read another book by Lovett, The Bookman’s Tale, and was turned on to a new sub genre for me…. Her heart is always in the right place and she never intentionally means to wound; she acts in what she genuinely believes to be the best interests of others. However, with the pandemic lockdown in place and since I purchased the physical version of the book for a song last year, and being in the mood for some Jane Austen-themed/inspired work, I picked it up.However, it wasn't until Becoming Jane was released that Austen began to come alive for me as more than an author's name on the cover of a beloved novel. In the years between the completion of First Impressions and its revision into Pride and Prejudice, two other works had been published under that name: a novel by Margaret Holford and a comedy by Horace Smith.

When Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, he cites their economic and social differences as an obstacle his excessive love has had to overcome, though he still anxiously harps on the problems it poses for him within his social circle. Her subsequent novels were similarly attributed to the anonymous author of all her then-published works.

The Bennets' marriage is an example that the youngest Bennet, Lydia, re-enacts with Wickham and the results are far from felicitous.
