Sometimes the Viking player might deem it worth going against a larger force to take over a spot generating more troops. The setup is the same regardless of player count due to 3-4 players simply divides the control of each side.

The card draw is random but each of the cards represent a historic leader along with a number of units for an invading army to be used that turn. Leaders bring huge waves of Viking Reinforcements, and they add exceptional mobility to invading Viking armies, allowing them to continue to battle and pillage as they move. One the first Viking player’s turn every round, they will draw the top card of their Leader deck and that will (usually) bring a leader into play with reinforcements. When playing with 2 players, each player will control the 2 factions of their chosen side and coordinate their strategies.

But instead of discarding it once played, it’s placed face up next to the board (or on the Treaty of Wedmore board). How to play 878: Vikings – Invasion of England The Sequence of Play reference sheet is very helpful. The simple and quick playing battles present a real ebb and flow that you can see across the board as the Vikings invade and are pushed back, a little less, each turn. The event cards may add a little wrinkle here and there to the overall flow of the game but all their game-changing rules are clearly presented on the cards themselves. The game plays out over at most 7 rounds or until the conditions are overwhelmingly in favour of one team. With the almost constant Viking invasion forces, each turn really does feel like a battering against a meagre force of defenders that somehow seem to keep things on a knife’s edge throughout the entire game. The English win if both Treaty of Wedmore cards have been played on either side and the Vikings don’t control at least 7 city shires at the end of Round 5 or later. My aim is to focus on reviewing board games and how they play for two people and, on occasion, how they play for one person. The active faction player is allowed to ‘command’ the pieces of their teammate and move them and battle with them freely.

This game system turned out to be a pleasant delight, and has me very interested in checking out some of the others like 1754 – Conquest: The French and Indian War (which I know she’ll like, because of the Indians). The English play as the Housecarl, the Kings’ household troops, or as the Thegns who were regional noble Leaders. Mark your calendar for 12/27 at 1PM Eastern Time (ET) for a deep dive into the final stages of building this epic game. Yes, there are lots of Vikings, and yes they’ll be lots of Invasions, on most turns as it turns out.In 878: Vikings – Invasions of England, players control the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion. Replay value also is limited in that unless players move on to the advanced game, there’s little to change the experience from game to game. But chances are that once you start playing, you’ll discover an urge to find out more about the actual setting you’re playing around with. If the leader wins the battle and still has units on his card as well as movement remaining, he can continue to move. You still get some decision about how to optimize that movement among your armies, but it stinks when you have no choices.

At the start of each round, a colored faction cube is drawn from the bag and placed on the next Turn space. For example, if there are only 2 Thegn units in a given Battle, they can only roll 2 dice, not their maximum 3. Vikings is an area control game in which 2 - 4 players play as the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion.Matt and Quinns taking on the streaming team of Creative Assembly, makers of the Total War videogames. The Viking Leader cards are shuffled by letter on the back and formed a deck – with the first card, letter A, being placed face up. The English can move more individual armies than the Vikings and are initiating fewer attacks at the beginning of the game. Each player completes that sequence until either the end of the 7th Round, Treaty cards or overwhelming force end the game. If the ‘English’ defenders go first then their opportunity to react to the Viking invasion is stymied.
