Description

An odyssey of mind, body and spirit, Food of the Gods is one of the most fascinating and surprising histories of consciousness ever written. Like fish in water, people in a culture swim in the virtually invisible medium of culturally sanctioned yet artificial states of mind.

If we're using drugs as an escape rather than a spiritual exploration, then we're not using them for the right reasons, in his view. On a philosophical note, one of my criticisms of the book is his insistence that the modern belief in the meaninglessness of the world, and also the belief that meaning is context-dependent, are both wrong. among the things really enjoyed about this book would be the authors mentioning of lesser thought of drugs like coffee, chocolate, sugar, and television. Most people are addicted to some substance and, more important, all people are addicted to patterns of behavior. His writing style is reminiscent of Tom Robbins, who led me in McKenna’s direction in the first place.

I later read 'The Invisible Landscape' on a Buddhist retreat (inventing my own programme which supplemented meditation with copious amounts of time spent reading other people's books in the dormitory). A book which I imagine will be read for a long time henceforth, as different cultures work out their own balance on intoxicating substances. The future development can be used for boosting health and longevity by improving the nourishment of the body with as much precious and not hallucinogenic elements of all holy and healthy herbs from around the world, a kind of organic wonder powder from dozens or even hundreds of everything the planet can provide. So the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge gave accurate insights, or perhaps it enhanced their appreciation of sensuality.

Qui compare una carrellata spropositata di stereotipi sulle sostanze stesse, sulla cultura patriarcale, e sul cristianesimo: insopportabile. It is perhaps one of the few plants of the many dozens claimed to be aphrodisiacs that actually performs as advertised. Alternative ideas of how something might have developed are always interesting and in this case, two interesting questions come to mind. Ample anecdotal evidence supports the existence of a preference for intoxicated states among elephants, chimpanzees, and some butterflies. And as a daring work of scholarship and exploration, it offers an inspiring vision for individual fulfilment and a humane basis for our interaction which each other and with the natural world.

This would suggest that there is a structure that is pre-given, but the meaning attributed to that structure would presumably be constructed through an interactive process between the perceiver and the perceived.
