Description

When a character goes into a new room, a deck of ‘door’ cards appears that can do anything from spawning additional monsters, turning it into a treasure room, or adding traps. The different dungeon-crawling scenarios will test their mettle, forcing them to work together to overcome the enemy.

I usually don’t like it when a game has multiple types of loot and only 1 stack of loot cards because a decent portion of loot is not useful to certain characters, but Massive Darkness 2 handles this problem well by giving players many opportunities to draw loot cards. There is a scenario in which players have to fight the Archangel Michael, but it’s because he’s been in Hell for so long he fights everything he sees. Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape takes the exciting dungeon-crawling action of the original Massive Darkness and brings it to a whole new level with new characters, components, system, and rules. The 4 oversized roaming monster miniatures are creative too, as are the 2 supersized boss miniatures.Massive Darkness 2’s designers Alex Olteanu and Marco Portugal did a great job with diversifying the 6 heroes in the game and making them asymmetric. This was a great throwback to computer RPG games and the addictive nature of trying to find all the set items.

To be fair, there are only 2 scenarios that feature a boss, and the boss fight does not last very long, so we’re talking about 10% or so of total gameplay, but that doesn’t stop boss fights from feeling like a missed opportunity. This is one of the negatives of the experience, because as fun as the game is, the cleanup and especially the setup takes a lot of time. While the end of the games drag a little, the overall package gives hours of fun each time it hits the table.

One of the other small knocks against it is in the late game, heroes often out-scale monsters, so the final part is just stomping through monsters. There is an inlaid depression to hold the cards and a raised edge to easily take the cards back out.
