Alix is convinced by Josie to make her the subject and storyline of her next podcast which reaches out to thousands of women suffering domestic and psychological abuse, and women who enjoy hearing other life stories. A life lived in fast-forward and now, apparently, she should peak and crest and then come slowly, contentedly down the other side, but it doesn’t feel as if there ever was a peak, rather an abyss formed of trauma that she keeps circling and circling with a knot of dread in the pit of her stomach. Josie is mesmerised and fascinated and then she realises that Alix too is 45 today, they really are birthday twins! She glances at Walter, at the fading glory of him, and she wonders how different things would be if she hadn’t met him. Saturday, 8 June, 2019 Josie can feel her husband’s discomfort as they enter the golden glow of the gastropub.

Perhaps if we’d had some POV from Josie after the shit hit the fan that would have cleared up her state of mind. She’d looked up the menu online earlier, so she’d be able to google stuff if she didn’t know what it was, so she already knows what she’s having. UNTIL Josie happens to run into Alix yet again - this time, outside of her children's school - and Josie has become completely enamored with Alix's podcast. But Josie seems like more than telling her story, lurking around Alix’s house, trying to be part of her life, criticizing her marriage. The narrative is interspersed with transcripts from Alix's interviews with Josie's neighbors, friends, and family members, revealing so many versions of events that readers will have some trouble deciding where the truth lies.

I think the biggest problem is that the title and the structure of the narrative kind of give away the fun? Many thanks to NetGalley, Atria, and Lisa Jewell for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! The narrative unfolds as two distinct women, brought together by a chance encounter at a pub, discover they share the same birthday. Though he isn't present in every scene, he conveys each piece of the story leading up to the murder as if he were an omniscient narrator, capable of accessing every character's interior perspective. She uses a similar technique here but with a little more subtlety, as a key moment takes place in the plot that opens up several different possibilities, especially when the transcripts from the Netflix documentary are added to the mix. Alix Summers, a popular podcaster, is out celebrating her forty-fifth birthday when she meets her birthday twin Josie Fair.
