As issues around physical and mental wellbeing become more prominent in the media and wider society, ‘Happy by Design’ offers design advice on creating ‘happier homes’ and has been written to appeal to and be of use to everyone – from architects and property developers to DIY homeowners and students to employers who want to make their workspace ‘happier’ for their staff. This process continued and after a while, I realised that this subject had far wider implications than I’d previously imagined, with the potential to improve the day-to-day lives of people around the world, so, the process of writing Happy by Design began. Writing and illustrating Happy by Design has been an incredibly educational experience, shaping me as an architect and a person. Given that we spend over 80% of our time in buildings, shouldn’t we have a better understanding of how they make us feel? Sometimes it just is not possible to throw your windows open or leave them uncovered for large parts of the day. If we started investing in happier buildings right now, the rewards would continue far into the future.

This is not only worse from an energy perspective but will also result in unhappier building occupants. When designing buildings, it is therefore extremely important to consider how you can improve both the quantity and quality of daylight, internally and within landscaping.
