About this deal

Movie recording can be started at any time by simply pressing the top-plate 'red button'. This nestles in between the exposure compensation dial and the power switch, meaning you're unlikely to start recording by accident. But this sheltered location, combined with the button's short travel, does have an impact when you stop recording; a lot of our hand-held movies signed off with obvious downwards camera movement from pressing the button at the end. This Fuji X-system is the first serious system designed from the ground-up as digital camera system with no ties whatsoever to film. For instance, the lenses are designed knowing they'll be working with a digital system, and the system automatically works in concert with these lenses to correct lateral color, distortion, light falloff and even diffraction all automatically. There's no way to shoot these lenses off the camera to see how they work without correction; they are intended to work with the camera as a complete system. The OLED EVF finder is fantastic. It's big, bright, sharp, colorful and clear — and it has no visible delay! It's image appears to be in real time, so no need for an optical finder anymore.

The Fujifilm X-T1's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Time shutter speed mode, and there's a Bulb mode which allows exposures up to 60 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds at ISO 200. Before we cast our eyes over Fujifilm’s latest creation, let’s refresh ourselves with the relatively swift expansion of the firm’s X-series models. In early 2011, Fujifilm launched the X100 with its fixed 23mm f/2 Fujinon lens, followed around a year later by what was considered the game changer, the X-Pro1. As the first interchangeable X-series model with its own XF-mount system of lenses, it marked an evolution that set out to target enthusiasts and professionals craving outstanding image quality from a more conveniently sized system, inspired by the classic styling of long-departed film cameras. Since 2012, Fujifilm’s objective has focused on expanding the X-series with slimmed-down versions of the X-Pro1, such as the X-E1 and the more recent X-E2. Other releases included the X-M1 and X-A1, which have made inroads into the consumer end of the market, rivalling Sony’s Alpha (formerly NEX) range of compact system cameras and Olympus’s Pen series. See all those dials? They're real engraved metal. It's trivially easy to set ISO, advance mode, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation and even the metering mode directly, because each of these functions has its own dedicated, single-purpose dial —just like a real camera! The Advance mode has its own dial, but it's marked in the finder only in some modes and only in microscopic letters.

You can program either of the ISO dial's H1 and H2 positions to any of ISO 12,800, ISO 25,600 or ISO 51,200. The rear quad controller is unmarked because you can program each of those four buttons to do what you want!

They should be fluorescent green for "go" for setting Auto ISO, Auto aperture and Auto shutter speed. I never use movies and would like to use the Movie button for something else instead. Unique non-Bayer color array that eliminates the need for an anti-alias filter and yields much sharper images compared to other camera, but limits what software can open the RAF raw files.

The X-T1 is quite large for a mirrorless model, but not a big camera by any means. It's remarkably similar in size to its most obvious competitor, the Olympus OM-D E-M1, which is also weather-sealed and has a large EVF and tilting rear screen. Compared to its sibling the X-E2, the X-T1 has essentially the same footprint, but is a bit taller due to its large top-mounted EVF. In terms of its outward appearance, the new Fujifilm X-T1 is quite a departure from previous X-series cameras, sporting a DSLR-look rather than the classic rangefinder design that the range has become well-known for. Fujifilm claim that this decision has been taken to try and broaden the appeal of the X-series to action photographers armed with longer lenses, but we suspect that the X-T1 has also been designed to appeal to the large number of potential customers that want a DSLR, or at least a camera that looks like one. Whatever the reason, the X-T1 is undoubtedly a good-looking camera, with a classic DSLR profile, just in miniature. The Fujifilm X-T1 produces images of outstanding quality. It recorded noise-free JPEG images at ISO 100 all the way up to 6400, with a little noise at ISO 12800 and more visible noise and slight colour desaturation at the faster setting of ISO 25600, an amazing performance for a camera with an APS-C sensor. The new highest speed of 51200 is best avoided though. The RAW files were also excellent, with usable images throughout the entire range of ISO 200-6400. I experimented with the continuous autofocus performance of the X-T1 when photographing my kids and here are the results:

( Fuji X-T1 with included EF-X8 flash, at Auto ISO 200, Standard color mode, +2 color saturation, Fuji 56mm f/1.2, f/16 at 1/180, Perfectly Clear.) bigger. Magnification : 0.77x with 50mm lens (35mm format equivalent) at infinity and diopter set to - 1.0m-1The EVF or rear LCD will count-down seconds during long exposures, but neither counts-down the time during which it shows "processing..." as a second equally-long dark-frame is recorded for automatic noise reduction. The X-T1 doesn't replace a DSLR for sports and action. Likewise, for my most serious nature and landscape work, I prefer the color palettes of my Nikon and Canon DSLRs. For everything else, the X-T1 is a blast, especially for people pictures. Later, the X-T1 won the EISA Award "Best Product 2014" in the category "Advanced Compact System Camera". [6] [7] When focusing through the EVF, a newly designed graphical user interface displays shooting information that rotates to remain clearly displayed along the bottom of the screen whether you’re holding it in landscape or portrait orientation, it’s a small touch, but it’s this kind of attention to detail that make this camera a joy to use. Digital Split Image assisted focusing in MF has also made its way into the X-T1, with optional focus peak highlighting, allowing you to maintain the composition of your image while a 100% crop of the selected AF-zone displayed beside it shows when the desired focus is achieved. Thanks to the generous size of the EVF, a function that sounds as though it would be cramped in practice, actually works very well.
