Description

The Latin name for Daisy is Bellis perennis. The meaning of this is not quite as straight forward. The genus, Bellis, could be either from the Latin for war, ‘bellum’, or from the Latin for beauty, ‘bellus’. 5 Another idea is that it is after the nymph, Belides, who transformed into a Daisy to escape the attention of Vertumnus (the Roman God of Seasons and Gardens). 5, 9 A sense of community and family is one of our core values. The exact origins of National Daisy Day continue to be a mystery—no one really knows who founded it and why. However, there is some speculation that National Daisy Day came about thanks to the greeting card industry as a way to boost sales with a new line of holiday cards.

We’ve lived everywhere man” as the song goes but are now permanently settled in Darlington – probably, but who knows? Native to Northern Europe and now found throughout North America, Australia, Africa, and South America, daisies find themselves in bouquets and homes across the world. What makes daisies so special is that they can be found in a wide range of elegant colors, allowing them to match the theme of any occasion or room. Daisies are a delightful family of flowers that offer a huge range of colors and a seemingly infinite number of varieties. With more than 20,000 different varieties, the daisy is a flower that is prolific and yet also very special. Considered to be ‘tender perennials’, certain daisies are able to stay alive over the winter as long as they are in warmer climates. However, in cooler climates, daisies are typically treated as annuals.

While some gardeners may have originally considered daisies to be a weed, it’s obvious that this flower offers much to the environment in the way of beauty as well as health. Some people don’t realize that many of the varieties of daisies are edible and healthy when eaten in salads or used to decorate sweet baked goods such as cakes. Life has bowled us some odd balls from time to time, which have inspired our books. Not going into details – don’t want to give any plot lines away.

Habitats

Would recommend to anyone who likes a nice, cosy book. No nastiness or rudeness-just funny ,in an old- fashioned way. The daisy was classified in 1792 by German botanist Paul Dietrich Giseke, who placed them in the Compositae family (also called the Asteraceae family). However, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew found daisy pollen grains embedded in fossils from over 20 million years ago, which means even dinosaurs were graced with their natural beauty. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew also states that the daisy family is one of the largest plant families, with over 1,600 genera and 23,000 species. In honor of National Daisy Day, perhaps this would be a great time to start growing some daisies. Of course, since the day comes at the end of January, in many climate zones it may still be a bit cold to plant them outside. In that case, seeds can be sown indoors in trays or individual pots approximately 8-10 weeks before the date of the last frost.
