Gurgling zombies and snarling wolves lurk in the night, and they’re closing in. With nowhere to hide, the lone traveler flees up a mountain, trapped and out of options . . . until a mysterious figure arrives, fighting off the horde singlehandedly. The unexpected savior is Summer, a fellow castaway and master of survival in these frozen wastes.

Martin, Tim (July 10, 2017). "The first Minecraft novel...or is it a self-help book?". 1843. The Economist Group. Archived from the original on July 27, 2023 . Retrieved August 15, 2023.

I talked with Max about how he found a great story in the clash of Guy and Summer’s personalities, and why that story is important in our pandemic-ridden times. But I had to first ask about what in the Overworld Guy is thinking when he decides to set out on his boat at the start of the book. Alex: Sobering stuff! But when they get together, we realize their two personalities work together well. Shown Their Work: Almost everything described in the book is something that can happen in-game, even if some events are unlikely to occur naturally. How Do I Shot Web?: A major part of the early chapters is the protagonist learning how Minecraft works and what they can and can't do, especially what foods they can and can't eat.

Minecraft: The Island - Wikipedia

PERFECT FOR: Creative players looking to improve their building prowess! Anyone who wants to take their builds to the next level. People who'd rather eat a box of their own hair than play Survival mode. Er, each to their own, I guess. Based on a True Story: Several of the novel's events were inspired by things that happened when Max Brooks played Minecraft. PERFECT FOR: Those looking for a fun novel with a Minecraft twist. Anyone who can relate to how hard it is to survive in Minecraft when we spawn you on an island in the middle of nowhere (yeah, sorry about that). Try a FREE sample of Chapter One here.Max Brooks: Research is very important to me in everything I do. I don’t write that many books because I have to spend years researching. With something like Minecraft, I live under the fear of someone saying, “That would never happen!” So I played thousands of hours of Minecraft, making sure the physics of the game work in the book. Plus, there are certain things that just happen in Minecraft that you could never think of on your own. In The Island, my character shoots his last arrow at a creeper and hits a bat that happens to fly by. That really happened when I was playing Minecraft! Audience Surrogate: The protagonist can't remember their gender, family, or what they look like, making it easier for the reader to imagine it were them. He's figured out how to punch trees for wood and build a shelter for the night, but things get real for Guy in The Mountain. He decides to strike out across the sea to see what else the world holds, and he lands on a frozen taiga coast. There, he encounters another person called Summer! Having learned how to survive on his own, now Guy is going to learn how to survive with someone else...
